Functional Psychiatrist Services

Beyond psychiatric conditions and symptoms are our abilities to function. These functional areas assume different levels of organization and expression, ranging from basic executive functioning to daily living and life skills at their highest order of organizational expression. These skills are seen in all areas of life including jobs, school, dating, families, aging, and death. Many times, the decrease in the severity of a difficult mental condition does not lead to an improvement in functioning. It takes work that is oftentimes more involved than the psychopharmacological or psychological treatment of the condition itself.

Functional assessment will only be started after you have completed your formal evaluation and treatment. We assume that if there are problems in function, they will have been present before the start of the difficulties that brought you to the Center. We also assume that treatment or any interventions for functional skills will need to take place over an extended period of time in parallel with treatment of the conditions that brought you to the Center and, more than likely, will extend much further, often requiring significant self analysis and philosophical development.

Step I - Formal Evaluation

The evaluation will involve three components. First is understanding if you have any functional executive difficulties. These are the bedrock of if you are a functional individual in your life, such as time management, project management, your ability to sustain projects over time, and your ability to complete projects over time. Second is an assessment of your mastery of daily living skills. Barriers are often manifestations of your underlying condition. Daily living skills include dressing, bathing, eating, shopping, communicating with others, managing your finances, and housekeeping, among many other things. The last area to be evaluated is your ability to function in a variety of common situations, such as in a job, school, relationships, etc.

Step II - Case Conceptualization

An overview and analysis of the evaluation will provide us with an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses and the relationship between your functional areas and your underlying condition or conditions.

Step III - Interventions guided by the evaluation

Given that we would like to help you develop a more balanced life in the areas of mind, body, and spirit, we would hope that the interventions we propose would support these as well as help you develop greater strength in your areas of weakness. Some types of interventions we would be offering include yoga, prayer, mindfulness, and exercises in self compassion.
