Dr. Alessi is constantly educating himself and seeking deeper knowledge of the conditions that he treats, including those I experience, and he continuously makes improvements to his treatment plans.

I started seeing Dr. Alessi in 2014. I look forward to talking with Dr. Alessi each week. My life is richer for these conversations. To the patient’s benefit it is clear that Dr. Alessi thinks often and deeply about his cases. He is a gifted clinician and appreciates the nuances and complexity of each individual. He goes above and beyond the standard of care for his patients. He is constantly educating himself and seeking deeper knowledge of the conditions that he treats, including those I experience, and he continuously makes improvements to his treatment plans.

Prior to working with Dr. Alessi, I had a pattern of negative interactions with people which I did not understand or know how to change and that severely impacted my ability to succeed. I also had paralyzing episodes of anxiety and depression. Through those years I repeatedly, unnecessarily scuttled jobs and social interactions. Dr. Alessi has helped me to understand how my ASD affects me and others’ interactions with me. He has helped me to become more aware of and to navigate the complex social milieu that comes with groups of people. With Dr. Alessi’s support, I am doing things now that I never thought I would be able to do: functioning in a work environment that requires nearly continuous rapport with coworkers and the public. My anxiety is less debilitating and my episodes of depression shorter and farther between. I am now more comfortably pursuing my career and establishing social relationships that help me follow my avocations. I feel lucky to have Dr. Alessi as a guiding influence in my life.

Our daughter has benefitted from the most recent research regarding her diagnosis and treatment

Dr. Alessi has dynamically impacted the well-being of our 28-year-old severely autistic daughter who is now at the happiest and highest-functioning level of her lifetime. In 2010, we came to Dr. Alessi for his expert assistance as she was aging out of a local treatment program, and to complicate her medical issues, she began exhibiting symptoms of bipolar disorder. After a thorough evaluation, he was able to build a medication and behavioral plan that allowed her, at first, to function with greater ease in her educational setting, and later, to enjoy a more engaged and fulfilling life. Our daughter has benefitted from the most recent research regarding her diagnosis and treatment because Dr. Alessi is committed to staying current by attending conferences and networking throughout the medical community. He has facilitated required paperwork for medical, educational, and insurance situations; in addition, he has been a knowledgeable and supportive professional who has helped our family navigate these sometimes turbulent waters. I give him my highest recommendation without reservation.

He not only helped my daughter by finding the right meds for her, but he was an understanding advisor /counselor for me as a parent.

Working with Dr. Alessi has been the best thing that ever happened to me. I first started seeing him about 10 years ago when I was a junior in college. At the time, my family and I were convinced that my struggles were simply caused by some mild anxiety. However, Dr. Alessi recognized that my mental health issues were much more complex. He helped me understand that my mental health conditions were debilitating, which prevented me from living life to the fullest. Over the years, he has worked incredibly hard to develop a treatment plan that has allowed me to be the happiest and most functional version of myself. For this, I am eternally grateful.

Dr. Alessi stands out from other psychiatrists in many ways. Most importantly, he has a rare combination of empathy and intelligence. He understands his patients’ suffering on a level that I have never seen before. At the same time, he is an expert in neuroscience, human behavior, and medications. He also thinks outside of the box, allowing him to see things in patients that other doctors may miss. Dr. Alessi is not just a psychiatrist; he is a wonderful person who cares about helping people.

He has a rare combination of empathy and intelligence

Dr. Alessi was recommended to me by the Director of the Autism Society of Michigan at a time when my adolescent daughter was having terrible anxiety and behavior issues. After some mostly successful years at a preschool and then elementary schools she had been transferred from an inclusive classroom to a self contained classroom at a middle school and it was a disaster. My daughter who is on the autism spectrum was unable to understand the teacher’s directions and the reason for them. The teacher was not trained in ASD and at one time referred to my daughter as “a monster.” One day my daughter had a terrible outburst at school and was then confined to a “quiet room” which resulted in her breaking the quiet room door window. The school them implemented her being taught by a teacher assigned to her in a separate room from her classmates for several months.

The small doses of medication that were effective in her childhood were not helping her at this time. At home her meltdowns were so extreme that on two different occasions she got down on the floor and ripped my thick pottery barn area rugs with her teeth. She banged her head on hard floors, she had a history of biting things, including computers , phones, and even people who were not careful to stay out of her space. These biting incidents were in my opinion, due to the frustration of not being able to communicate, and tremendous anxiety, not anger or aggression directed at another person. Visual schedules and written directions worked for her, and when teachers or family members did not use the visual supports she needed or understand her attempts to communicate her needs she became very upset. I remember one incident being very anxious while trying to advocate for my daughter’s needs and as I raised my voice with fear for her safety at a swimming pool event, the teacher gave her assistants these instructions about me: “DO NOT ENGAGE! DO NOT ENGAGE!” “Implying I was not sane. At the time I believed my daughter was going to have a meltdown and either hurt someone or be hurt herself. The humiliation of being treated like that by a teacher was extremely difficult.

Dr. Alessi was able to find a combination of medications that calmed her enough to get through this difficult period. Dr. Alessi was a godsend at a time when I had lost hope --even with years of occupational and speech therapy , behavior specialists, my own training at various autism conferences I had run out of ideas. He not only helped my daughter by finding the right meds for her, but he was an understanding advisor /counselor for me as a parent.
My daughter is a very funny, loving, intelligent and talented person. She has a photographic memory and retains a lot of information about her favorite things: music, dinosaurs, Muppets, movies and their directors and actors. She loves to sing especially with an audience and has sung at weddings and talent shows. She is sweet and honest. Her friends and family are now able to celebrate her unique beauty and charming wit. We have struggled to find a place in the world for her, and with Dr. Alessi’s help she now has a stable life of her own with many supports.

He has consistently gone above and beyond our expectations of a psychiatrist.

Our family has had the pleasure of working with Dr. Alessi for about 1.5 yrs. We found him while searching for a psychiatrist for our then 20 yr. old son. It’s safe to say that we found him at just the right time!

Our son was previously undiagnosed with ASD and suffering from extreme anxiety. It was affecting every part of his life. Dr. Alessi quickly found a way to bond with him and build trust, allowing our son to open up like never before. It’s been a journey and we are grateful to have his expertise. We have found him to be extremely accessible, honest, and responsive to our questions and concerns. He has consistently gone above and beyond our expectations of a psychiatrist. We have no doubt that he cares deeply about our son (and us!).

Dr. Alessi shows great care, consideration and a desire to understand my child.

We started seeing Dr. Alessi in 2012 when my child was three years old. He listens to my concerns and is straightforward about his diagnosis and expectations. His experience with medication and treatments has helped my child in many ways. Dr. Alessi shows great care, consideration and a desire to understand my child. He has personally visited my child many times in schools and outside therapies. I do not believe my child would have come as far as he has without the help of Dr. Alessi.
